Here's where and what to focus on. by Julie Mason Whether you have already started to count down the days or you haven't started thinking about how to wrap up the school year, here are my tips and strategies for where to focus your time and energy so you leave on the last day before summer feeling great about your finish.   Did you make a plan or goal in the beginning of the year, and now you are realizing you haven't prioritized it?   This happened to me every year I taught.   One year, I wanted to focus on making students' progress visible.   In an attempt to make my students’ progress visible to them, I gave each student a folder, and after I returned assignments and projects, I asked them to keep it in the folder. My goal was to make my students’ progress visible to them, so they had evidence of their growth. I have always believed that we need to help our students see that learning is a process that takes time. Whether or not they learned something isn’t always determined by a test grade. Fast forward to the last two months of school, and I was in a rush to get through my curriculum. I was waking up in the middle of the night worried that we weren’t going to fit in one last essay or finish our last whole class novel. When was I going to find the time for students to look through their folders? How could I make this process meaningful and worth class time? Quality Over Quantity When you have limited teaching time left, you might feel pressure to pack it all in, and increase your pace. Instead of assigning one chapter, you assign two. Instead of spending fifteen minutes practicing grammar skills before the quiz, you cut it down to ten. While this is tempting, try to take a step back and consider the big picture, and prioritize. Use These Guiding Questions What do my students need to learn and practice in order to be ready for next year? What parts of the curriculum are essential? What parts of the curriculum are non-essential?   One of the ways that I addressed having too much to teach and not enough time, was to assign related thematic passages from our last novel, instead of the entire text. I decided that what my students needed to learn and practice was close reading and marking up the text. They didn’t need to read an entire novel in order to do this practice. Focus On What’s Important Too often the end of the school year becomes a race to the finish, and there is little to no time to celebrate the class community and the students’ progress. What will impact your students most? A few more hours of grammar instruction? A reflective writing assignment where they consider what they learned and what goals they have for next year? Try to strike a balance between teaching topics and skills, and providing opportunities for celebration and reflection. Make Student Progress Visible Let’s go back to the folders. I believe that if we create a system and ask students to do something that we have to show them that that process had a purpose. If I didn’t circle back to the work in the folders why was I asking my students to keep their returned work? One of my favorite ways to make student progress visible is to take an assignment that I gave students earlier in the year and give them the same assignment towards the end of the year. For example, one of the first writing assignments I gave students was to write a descriptive paragraph about a photograph. I had an entire box full of images that they could choose from. Students do the same assignment later in the year and the improvement in their writing was always powerful. They included figurative language, and sensory details, and their grammar and syntax was stronger. After students have completed the assignment for a second time, you have students put both assignments side by side. They can then see the progress that they’ve made. I like to give students a checklist of writing skills and topics and ask them to think about their progress in each of those areas. By the end of this exercise, students feel proud of themselves, especially students who thought they weren’t doing well or getting a good grade in my class. They had tangible proof of their own growth and the activity is both an opportunity for reflection and celebration. Make Your Own Progress Visible We never have enough time in our teaching days, and self-reflection always falls to the bottom of our to-do list. However, self-reflection is incredibly important at the end of the school year. Consider all of your routines and procedures and identify what you want to use next year, and what you want to stop using or change. Try to jot down as much as you can about the specific changes you plan to make so your notes will be helpful as you prepare to return to the classroom. Give Yourself Glows and Grows Practice what you preach. We encourage our students to identify what they have learned and how they have grown, while also recognizing their challenges and the areas they can work on. Think about this teaching year. What are you most proud of? Was there a new assignment that went really well? Did you figure out a system for grading that saved you time? Do you have a classroom routine for equitable participation that ensured you called on more students? Give credit where credit is due.   Consider also what didn’t go as well as you hoped. While he is in the hospital, his mindset is still as if he is in the war. Before doing any task such as eating, he has to convince himself that he is no longer in battle. Morrison says, â€Å"Thus reassured that the white, the red and the brown would stay where they were – would not explod e or bust forth from their restricted zones – he suddenly felt hungry and looked around for his hands† (Morrison 9). Shadrack has gotten to the point where he is afraid of everything, including his own hands. He ironically returns from the war less afraid of death than he was when he was in battle and more while in safety. He is not afraid of death itself but rather more afraid of not knowing when his death will occur. As a means of coping with the unknown, Shadrack creates a national holiday. â€Å"He knew the smell of death and was terrified of it, for he could not anticipate it. It was not death or dying that frightened him, but the unexpectedness of it†¦in this manner he instituted National Suicide Day† (14). Every January 3rd on National Suicide Day, he would walk down the streets with a hanging rope and cowbell encouraging people to kill themselves or others because it was the only opportunity to escape the memory of death. Those around him know what h e went through but still think he is crazy and irrational. As time goes on, people come to accept National Suicide Day as part of their traditions and rituals. After an awful winter and thaw occur, the residents of the town look forward to and participate in National Suicide Day for the first time because it is an event they are used to and helps them to forget about everything that has happened by doing something familiar. Ironically, when the people are ready to participate in full force for the first time, it is also the first time that Shadrack does not want to have the march. For years he marched alone trying to rally supports, and now when he has them, the leader and creator himself no longer wants it to continue. Shadrack was not the only character used by Morrison who suffered severe mental issues as result of World War I. Eva’s son, Plum, returns home from the war much like Shadrack did but, in contrast, turned into a drug addict to cope with his difficulties. Plumâ €™s change into a drug addict had numerous signs that were slowly being seen more and more. Hannah as the one to actually find out he was on drugs. Morrison says, â€Å"Then he began to steal from them, take trips to Cincinnati and sleep for days in his room with the record player going†¦It was Hannah who found the bent spoon black from steady cooking.† (45). Plum’s descent into drugs was over a period of time. They noticed that he was stealing items from his own family members and leaving town to go on random trips. Hannah ends up being the one to fully realize the extent of his drug addiction when she finds the black spoon in his possession. However, what happens as a result of his drug addiction affects more people than just his own body and self. While sleeping one night, Plum is awakened by his mother who is there to comfort him. They lay there as Eva holds Plum in her arms. Later, he thinks she is pouring water or a liquid on him as a blessing but it tur ns out not to be. â€Å"He opened his eyes and saw what he imagined was the great wing of an eagle pouring a wet lightness over him†¦She rolled a bit of newspaper into a tight stick about six inches long, lit it and threw it onto the bed where the kerosene-soaked Plum lay in snug delight.† (47). After seeing her son in such a state, Eva does not want him to suffer any longer nor does she want to see his drug addiction worsen. Evas decision to toss the lit kerosene stick toward him benefits her own desires as well, though. Throughout Plum’s descent into drug addiction, Eva has had to take care and support Plum far more than a regular child at an adult age. She has essentially had to go backwards in motherhood and treat Plum as if he is a young child again. In order to escape the responsibility of caring for her son, she pours kerosene on his body while he’s sleeping and burns him to death. She burns him to death as a sign of her love for him, but it also sh ows selfishness in Eva. She thinks the future of those around her is under her control as well as her right so she takes Plum’s matters into her own hands. The concept that a mother would burn her own son to death out of love is confusing and unimaginable to the reader. As the other members of the household, including Hannah and Sula, and the neighbors rush to try and extinguish the fire, Eva stands by watching and raises confusion and questions by everyone else. Hannah and Eva have always had a complicated and struggling relationship, especially since it is common knowledge that Eva loved Plum more than Hannah. What Eva does to Plum only hurts and strains the relationship between her and Hannah even further. Eva does, however, show that she still loves her daughter when she risks her own life for her. When Hannah is outside in the yard, her own dress lights on fire and burns her to death. However, Eva, who is watching nearby, nearly sacrifices her own life when she jumps on Hannah trying to extinguish the fire. When she is watching Hannah in the yard from inside the window, she looks away briefly and then back outside towards, witnessing her daughter’s dress in flames from head to toe ignited by a yard fire. â€Å"She rolled up to the window and it was then she saw Hannah burning. The flames from the yard fire were licking the blue cotton dress, making her dance. Eva knew there was time for nothing in this world other than the time it took to get there and cover her daughter’s body with her own.† (75). Instantly, Eva jumps out of the window and runs toward Hannah thinking that if she can cover her up with her own body, she can extinguish the fire and safe Hannah’s life. Eva’s actions contradict the current relationship between the two of them, indicating that Eva does still love her daughter. Neighbors and family members present quickly began pouring water onto both Eva and Hannah but by that time it is too late for H annah. Her body and flesh has already burned too badly for any chance of recovery. â€Å"Hannah died on the way to the hospital. Or so they said. In any case, she had already begun to bubble and blister so badly that the coffin has to be kept closed at the funeral.† (77). Both Eva and Hannah were put on stretchers and brought to the hospital together. Upon arrival, Hannah was the priority of the doctors and Eva was simply left on the floor in severe condition because it wasn’t as bad as her daughter’s. However, she was left there and fortunately enough was found by a custodian and barely saved. â€Å"When Eva got to the hospital they put her stretcher on the floor, so preoccupied with the hot and bubbling flesh of the other†¦they forgot Eva, who would have bled to death except Old Willy Fields, the orderly, saw blood staining his just-mopped floors.† (77). The tragic event that occurs to Hannah is devastating to all but what is perhaps the most surpr ising is Eva’s reaction. As mentioned before, Plum was always the favorite child and Eva went as far as to say that she didn’t even love Hannah. However, in Hannah’s time of need, everything that was said did not hold true. Eva risked and nearly sacrificed her own life for her daughter. If Hannah could have lived to see what her mother did to save her life, their relationship most likely would have, for the first time, strengthened. Toni Morrison used the action of death to further describe the relationships between different characters and how they were affected by the death of others. Although it is common for many relationships to strengthen through death as a method of grieving, more relationships are hurt in a negative way throughout Sula. People thought Shadrack’s actions were crazy and disregarded them, but, by the end, many of the same people joined him in his efforts. Hannah and her mother’s relationship worsens, thinking that her mother d oes not love her or Plum, but Eva does love her as evidenced by her sacrifice to save Hannah’s life. Unfortunately, Hannah is no longer around to see how their relationship could have eventually changed and strengthened. Morrison portrays the relationship between characters by a means of death in unique and effective ways while creating a strong impact on the reader.

Oedipus and Othello were both honorable and heroic men that became the victims of tragic downfalls that can be compared and contrasted with each other. Sophocles, the writer of Oedipus the King, and Williams Shakespeare, the writer of Othello, were both enormously influential playwrights of their respective generations and their legacy continues today. The two playwrights made their masterpieces during different eras; Sophocles life coincided with the Golden Age of Greek tragedy and Shakespeare worked during the Elizabethian period. Stefano was a contractor who owned his own medium sized construction company while Paolo raised Sonia and her two sisters. When Sonia turned 18 her father moved her to Cambridge University, where he had no idea her life was a bout to change for ever.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1965, just a year after arriving in England, Sonia met a young Indian student named Rajiv Gandhi (1944â€Å"1991), who was studying mechanical engineering at Cambridge University. According to Sonia Gandhi, it was love at first sight. The courtship, however, lasted three years, perhaps because Rajiv was from one of the most famous families in India, if not the world. Sonias parents were reluctant to have her become involved in such a different culture, and Sonia herself was nervous about meeting Rajivs famous mother, Indira Gandhi (1917â€Å"1984), who was the first lady of India. Indira Gandhis father, Jawaharlal Nehru (1889â€Å"1964), became the countrys first prime minister after India claimed its independence from Great Britain in 1947, and Gandhi worked closely with him until his death. In 1965 according to Bindra, Satinder. Indira Gandhi was poised to fill Nehrus shoes. Although Sonia felt as if she was not good enough to pursue her relations hip with Rajiv, his mother and her became fast friends.     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1968 Sonia and Rajiv were married in a simple wedding ceremony in India. Sonia had the opportunity to wear a pink sari, in which her mother in law had worn at her own ceremony. A stunned Indira Gandhi begged her older son to join the familys political ranks. Sonia Gandhi was vehemently opposed to the idea, fearing that her husband might be injured or killed, given the explosive nature of Indian politics. After several long discussions, however, the couple jointly agreed that Rajiv should quit his job with the airlines. Although Sonia Gandhi was not pleased, she was a dutiful wife and supported her husbands decision. In 1981 Rajiv ran successfully for Parliament and took over the seat vacated by his brother. He served as the representative from the Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh, a state in northern India populated by approximately 160 million inhabitants.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Sonia Gandhi, resigned to the fact that her husband must lead his country, became his vigilant supporter and submerged herself in the role of a prime ministers wife. She became an art historian and worked with a team at the National Gallery in New Delhi to restore Indian landscapes. She also collected and edited letters that had been sent between Indira Gandhi and her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, which were ultimately published in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Despite Sonia Gandhis successes, however, her husband Rajiv was a less-than-successful ruler. He was never able to match the popularity of his famous mother, and his administration was plagued by one problem after another, including charges of illegal arms dealings. As a result, in 1989 Rajiv Gandhi was voted out of office.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Seeing as Sonia Gandhi is not a native-born India citizen, one of the adversities that she had to overcome was adapting to their culture. She was considered as being from a western civilization. One way that she had overcome this adversity was by living with her mother in law and following in their familys footsteps. She learned to adopt to surroundings even learned how to speak Hindu.   Sonia was also faced with being apart of the most famous family in India. She felt as if she was not qualified to be in her husbands position. She decided after being asked consistently to become the prime minister of India. She was voted in for two terms, she decided that if she was ever in the position where she had to choose the inner voice or the public voice, she would go with the inner voice. In 2004 she declined being prime minister and offered the position to a long-time friend. (Schneider, Bill. Gandhi Has Power but Declines Post). She overcame many of the adve rsities she faced by being a loving devoted wife to her husband.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In India, many of the peers who surrounded her loved her and wanted her to continue on with being the leader of India. She made such a positive impact on their nation, that she will forever be a known icon to them. She presented her self as confident, and willing to go the extra mile to make sure that their country was protected and taken care of.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   I think that her story furthers the cause for women in leadership because she became a well-liked leader and prime minister of India. This helps women who want to become leaders, keep pushing forward, and show the world that you can and make it better. She showed strength and courage moving to India, not knowing what the future had in store. She also showed strength by not backing down when both her mother in law and her husband were assassinated. She stood her ground and made sure her country knew that no matter what happened, she had their backs and that they would make it through the storms and triumphs.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Something that I found relatable in her story to a college student is that she didnt give up when the tough got going. College students are faced with many turmoils during their time in college. We are faced with love at first sight, such as she was. We are also faced with learning a new environment such as she did twice. In her story, she never gave up her morals and continued her with heart. In college many of us feel as if we want to give up because we are burned out, but because our morals and hearts tell us to strive on, we do. We are faced with the same scenarios and triumphs that she faced and over-came. A lesson that I took away from her story is love conquers all. I am married to someone who was raised in a complete different culture. Like Sonia, I was raised in a strict catholic home. However, when I turned 19 I married my best friend. He was raised in Palestine and was raised in a strict Muslim family. When I married him, I had to overcome the cultural barrier, and was scared that his mother and father would think less of me because I didnt follow their religion. Here we are 6 years later, and I support his and his familys decisions no matter what they are. I love him with all my heart, so being his number one fan has allowed me to support him whether I agree or disagree, such as Sonia did for Rajiv.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Sonia Gandhi did adhere to the advice given in The Confidence Code and Lean In. In the book The Confidence Code it states that embracing adversity is something that the west could use to improve their strengths. I feel that Sonia Gandhi put this to test when she chose to adapt to the culture in India. This was an example of her embracing the adversity and rolling with it. Some of the adversity that Sonia encountered when she moved to India did not break and send her running back to Italy, it made her stronger.   In face her embracing the adversity made her Prime Minister! Not only did this help her live up to the expectations of her husband but also her mother in law, who happened to be known as the First Lady of India.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In chapter nine of Lean In, the title of it says it all! Sonia did just that. She was the back to her husband Rajiv and supported him no matter the circumstance. She adapted to a culture entirely different that what she had been accustomed to just to be married to Rajiv Gandhi. She worked and pushed her self beyond her limits of existence. She was never seen in the media when it came to political debates while her mother in law and husband were alive, she put her self out there. She gained enough confidence and experience to succeed in what she chose to do, whether everyone loved her or not. She didnt allow any of the bumps in the road to stop her and when there was a mountain to climb, she climbed it. Reading about Sonia Gandhi has made me realize that if more women were like her and as strong minded, there would be more women in leadership and being political leaders. These are: (S) Specificity (P) Progression (O) Overload (R) Reversibility (T) This is there because it is a simple way of remembering the principles of training Specificity Any type of training must be suitable or specific to the activity that you are training for E.g. A strength building programme will not train your body in order to run a marathon. Aswell as choosing a type of training you may wish to train concentrate on part of the body too E.g. strength building on the legs. SPECIFIC EXERCISES WILL NOT PRODUCE SPECIFIC RESULTS Each activity will have different specific demands. Most physical activities require a combination of exercises and it is important to analyse exactly what is required and those requirements can be met. It will even be necessary to identify relevant muscle groups. Overload This is making the body work harder than normal in order to improve it. Overload can be achieved in the following ways. Frequency of training: To start with you may only train twice a week with a recovery period in between. This could be increased to every other day and then to five times a week to create overload. Intensity: You can increase the intensity by simply working harder at the training method you are using e.g. twenty minute jog at 50 % of max speed increased to twenty minute jog at 60 % of max speed. Time/ Duration: Refers to the length of each training session and this should be made longer to achieve overload. Unfortunately we can’t increase the time of each session because we are confined to lesson times. Your body responds to overload by adapting to it. Used sensibly it will lead to an improvement. Progression The training you are doing and particularly the amount of overload must be increased progressively. In other words, as your adapts to the increased demands that you are putting on it, then that demand should be steadily increased. If you sty at the same level so will your fitness, but you must not do too much too soon, this will lead to injury. Reversibility If you either stop or decrease your training you go into reverse and lose the effect. There are three heart rate zones they are normal, which is below 60% of your highest heart rate and there is aerobic respiration, which is above 60% of your max heart rate, and below 85% of max heart rate then there is anaerobic respiration, which is above 85% of max heart rate. When your heart rate is normal this means no benefit from training so this is bad so I have to make myself go above 60% of my max heart rate for someone my age because everyone has a different heart rate. It is believed that your max heart rate is 220- your own age e.g. 220 – 15 = 205 beats a minute which is extremely fast therefore 123 is my aerobic point and 174 is my anaerobic point. A way you can see your anaerobic point is on this graph: To make my fitness programme effective for my current level of fitness I will use many bits of information gathered such as the results from nine fitness tests preformed in class times also I will use whether recent illness has effected my performance of late. The results were in a table like this one: This table shows that I had an average attempt but can improve in allot of areas so I will focus on these areas. The areas that most concerns me is co-ordination and reactions this is because they are needed most of the time playing football e.g. when I need to dribble and look up for options so this is good when a cross can get into the box. Reactions are needed in football when the ball can’t be seen when it is crossed then at the last minute you see it and need to control it. So in my programme I will be using this information to get these different fitness components improved. Over the last two weeks I have had lots to eat this being bad food for fitness because it is that time of year so this may effect my ability at the start of the course. I have had no real illness but the slight illness has now gone and I am back to normal and fighting fit. My football skills always need to be improved so I will use practices to improve passing and shooting techniques so these will be included to my fitness programme. Also I will do a little on control because it makes no harm practicing that. You should always do a warm up before each main activity because it is light exercise to get the blood pumping around the body. Also during a warm up your muscles get by the blood flowing around them gets faster and this lowers the risk of injury. The warm up also heats up synovial fluid this makes joints more mobile. When stretching in a warm up this helps muscles, tendons and ligaments from getting strained. When doing simple skills this your muscles but also helps psychologically. So this light exercise helps all three elements of health if doing in a group. In a good warm up before any sport there should be three main phases a gross body movement stage where by you do simple jogging for a long time doing such things as bringing your knees up to your chest, flicking your bottom with your heels then when you feel it is good gradually get faster into sprinting. This is to get the blood pumping around your body this also may improve slightly on cardio vascular endurance. Remember go from slow to a faster speed. My gross body movement arrangement can be shown in this diagram: The second stage of any warm up should be stretching this will help loosen the main joints this also helps to stop muscles, tendons and ligaments straining. The stretching phase should start from your ankles upwards stretching nearly every muscle. To improve flexibility you should stretch from 10-30 seconds and doing it regularly should be 8-10 seconds. The stretches used should be one as these: The next stage in the warm up is the skills stage, which helps the psychological side giving focus and determination. In this stage there should be simple tasks, which involve skills needed in a game e.g. passing against the wall controlling it and passing again and other various simple tasks. After the main activity there should be a cool down this should be included because helps your body recover after vigorous activity. Like the warm up this has phases but only two they are gross body movement and stretching. The gross body movement stage this time is to give oxygen to the muscles meaning lactic acid can be removed thus giving the muscle less stiffness. During the warm up you go from slow to fast this time go from fast to slow. Use many of the techniques shown in section five on the warm up. Finish off the cool down with some stretches this should loosen your muscles and prevent stiffness because usually after exercise muscles are often tight. As before in the warm up go from ankles upwards. Use the stretches shown in the warm up section. To monitor my performance of my activities in the 6 sessions I will use this table: I have used this table because it sets a target for each session and shows how close I was to meeting the target so if my sessions are good I should reach the target easily each time. I will make sure that the area is safe for others and myself. I will pack things away and leave them in safe places and make sure they are out of the way. I will try to set up things in an area that is out of the way of other people so noone is harmed. I will put things away immediately away after use. Perhaps unconsciously she seems determined to provethem wrong. As the story begins, the woman whose name we never learn tells of herdepression and how it is dismissed by her husband and brother. You see, hedoes not believe I am sick! And what can one do? If a physician of highstanding, and ones own husband, assures friends and relatives that there isreally nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression a slighthysterical tendency what is one to do? (Gilman 193). These two men bothdoctors seem completely unable to admit that there might be more to hercondition than than just stress and a slight nervous condition. Even when asummer in the country and weeks of bed-rest dont help, her husband refuses toaccept that she may have a real problem. Throughout the story there are examples of the dominant submissiverelationship. She is virtually imprisoned in her bedroom, supposedly to allowher to rest and recover her health. She is forbidden to work, So I . . . amabsolutely forbidden to work until I am well again. (Gilman 193). She is noteven supposed to write: There comes John, and I must put this away he hatesto have me write a word. (Gilman 194). She has no say in the location or decor of the room she is virtuallyimprisoned in: I dont like our room a bit. I wanted . . . But John would nothear of it. (Gilman 193). She cant have visitors: It is so discouraging not to have any advice andcompanionship about my work. . . but he says he would as soon put fireworks inmy pillow-case as to let me have those stimulating people about now. (Gilman196). Probably in large part because of her oppression, she continues to decline. I dont feel as if it was worthwhile to turn my hand over for anything. . .(Gilman 197). It seems that her husband is oblivious to her declining conditon,since he never admits she has a real problem until the end of the story atwhich time he fainted. John could have obtained council from someone less personally involved inher case, but the only help he seeks was for the house and baby. He obtains ananny to watch over the children while he was away at work each day: It isfortunate Mary is so good with the baby. (Gilman 195). And he had his sisterJennie take care of the house. She is a perfect and enthusiastic housekeeper.(Gilman 196). He does talk of taking her to an expert: John says if I dont pick upfaster he shall send me to Weir Mitchell in the fall. But she took that as athreat since he was even more domineering than her husband and brother. Not only does he fail to get her help, but by keeping her virtually aprisoner in a room with nauseating wallpaper and very little to occupy her mind,let alone offer any kind of mental stimulation, he almost forces her to dwell onher problem. John is a physician,and perhaps . . . perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster. You seehe does not believe I am sick! And what can one do? (Gilman 193). It seemsto me that while putting on an appearance of submission she was frequentlyrebelling against her husbands orders. She writes when there is nobody aroundto see her, she tries to move her bed, but always keeps an eye open for someonecomming. This is obvious throughout the story. It also seems to me that, probably because of his oppressive behaviour, shewants to drive her husband away. John is away all day, and even some nightswhen his cases are serious. I am glad my case is not serious! (Gilman 195). As her breakdown approaches she actually locks him out of her room: I havelocked the door and thrown the key down into the front path. I dont want to goout, and I dont want to have anybody come in, till John comes. I want toastonish him. (Gilman 203). Bacterial Growth Requirements Free Online Research Papers Bacteria are single celled organisms that can only be seen with a microscope. They are so small that scientists measure them in micrometers. A micrometer is equal to one millionth of a meter. On average, a bacterium is equal to one micrometer long. This would mean that the head of a pin could hold hundreds of thousands of these microorganisms. Bacteria, which can be traced back 3.5 billion years, live all around us and also inside us. They are in the air, soil and water of the earth and in plants and animals as well. In humans bacteria can be found in many places. They are on skin surfaces, the inner surfaces of our nose, throat, stomach and intestines, to name a few. The only places you normally don’t find bacteria in our bodies, according to Encarta,† is in the muscles, blood and the nervous system.† They can, however, invade these areas and cause our immune system to get rid of them. Generally, most bacteria live in or on our bodies and help prevent disease. (pg.2) According to Alcamo’s Fundamentals of Microbiology,† growth in the microbial world usually refers to an increase in the population size†. Bacteria reproduce asexually using a process called binary fission. Binary fission involves cytokinesis which is an inward pinching of the cell wall that separates it into two. This process occurs after a cell has grown large enough to divide. Under the right conditions some bacteria can reproduce in 15 to 20 minutes. This means that one cell can become two in that time and those two will then become four cells in about half an hour. After 6 hours, in ideal conditions, one bacterial cell can become 131,000 or more bacteria. (pg.139) In order for bacteria to grow and reproduce they need nutrients and other outside factors. The nutrients are absorbed through pores in the cell wall and passed into the cytoplasm. Some examples of the factors important to cell growth are oxygen, temperature and pH level. â€Å"A thermophile grows at high temperatures, an acidophile grows at low pH, and an osmophile grows at high solute concentration,† are according to textbookofbacteriolgy.com, which shows how the names correspond with growth conditions. (pg.8) Temperature has been deemed one of the most important factors for growth because each species has an ideal growth temperature. The temperature range for these bacteria is a range of approximately 30 degrees with their ideal temp being somewhere in the middle. For example, â€Å"the thermophiles mentioned earlier multiply best at 60 degrees Celsius but still multiply between 40 and 70 degrees,† according to Alcamo’s Fundamentals of Microbiology. They tend to multiply better at the higher temperatures than they do at the lower ones. There are, however, cells that are opposite of this and would multiply better at lower temperatures than they would at the higher ones. (pg.147) The next factor important for growth is oxygen. Many bacteria depend highly on oxygen and those are called aerobic cells. Oxygen in aerobic cells is used to make energy which is important for cell function and growth. There are, however, cells that don’t need oxygen and these are called anaerobic. Anaerobic cells would, obviously, use means other than oxygen for their energy source. The pH level, which refers to the acidity or alkalinity level, is very important to bacterial cells. The cytoplasm in most of them has a pH level of 7.0 which is in the neutral range. This would make it important for these cells to be in an environment with a similar level in order for them to grow. There are cells that are more tolerant to lower acid levels and can survive in them. However, the majority don’t grow well in acidic environments. In the human body this is good news for the stomach. The acid levels here would help deter disease and keep bacteria from reaching other areas beyond the stomach. As stated previously, bacteria are everywhere and in most cases are harmless and beneficial. However, there are bacteria that cause disease and when the immune system is not functioning properly they can invade areas of the body. Generally harmless bacteria can also become a problem if they enter the body through a cut or injury and make their way into the bloodstream. The bloodstream is one of the areas bacteria are not normally found and in the case of a weak immune system it would be an ideal place for them to multiply. For many cells the temperature, oxygen and pH levels are perfect in the bloodstream, for growth, and this can cause many problems for the human body. Other places that bacteria can grow which are harmful to a person are food and water. When they multiply to high numbers on things that we ingest it can cause food poisoning and other serious and sometimes deadly diseases. The human immune system is designed to help keep bacteria counts at a normal range to keep us healthy and to fight off attacks of harmful bacteria. There are also other ways in which we can protect ourselves if our immune system is weak. One way is through antibiotics which are antibacterial drugs that are a very important part of the battle with bacteria. However, in time bacteria can become immune to antibiotics so they are no longer effective. Other ways to insure good health and good bacteria counts is through vaccines and maintaining healthy clean environments. Fellow Citizens of the Senate and of the House of Representatives In resuming your labors in the service of the people it is a subject of congratulation that there has been no period in our past history when all the elements of national prosperity have been so fully developed. Since your last session no afflicting dispensation has visited our country. General good health has prevailed, abundance has crowned the toil of the husbandman, and labor in all its branches is receiving an ample reward, while education, science, and the arts are rapidly enlarging the means of social happiness. The progress of our country in her career of greatness, not only in the vast extension of our territorial limits and the rapid increase of our population, but in resources and wealth and in the happy condition of our people, is without an example in the history of nations. As the wisdom, strength, and beneficence of our free institutions are unfolded, every day adds fresh motives to contentment and fresh incentives to patriotism. Our devout and sincere acknowledgements are due to the gracious Giver of All Good for the numberless blessings which our beloved country enjoys. It is a source of high satisfaction to know that the relations of the United States with all other nations, with a single exception, are of the most amicable character. Sincerely attached to the policy of peace early adopted and steadily pursued by this Government. I have anxiously desired to cultivate and cherish friendship and commerce with every foreign power. The spirit and habits of the American people are favorable to the maintenance of such international harmony. In adhering to this wise policy, a preliminary and paramount duty obviously consists in the protection of our national interests from encroachment or sacrifice and our national honor from reproach.
